I love this thing. I bought it to replace a trampled Harmony XBox 360 remote, and I'm glad I decided to upgrade. The color screen looks loads better than the GameBoy-esque Green-on-Green LCD on the XBox Harmony remote. The only thing I wish this had that the 360 Harmony has is a rubber grommet to go over the USB port. The buttons on the 720 are also a lot quieter than the 360, but that may just be in my head because this remote looks more legitimate or "grown-up" than the 360. The only complaint that I have with this remote, or any remote for that matter, is the painted text/numbers on the buttons. I hate seeing remotes that have had the print rub off over the life of the remote. I don't think it would be too much to ask for all of the keys to be back lit. Other than those two very minor gripes, I highly recommend this remote to anyone that doesn't own an RF controlled piece of kit! Otherwise, go with the Harmony 890.

I lost the remote to my receiver which is the hub of my entire system whether I am watching TV or listening to audio. I figured it would turn up somewhere. After numerous searches, and many months going by, I gave up; it was time to buy a replacement. I tried to find a universal remote but could not find one that worked with my receiver. Most of them were for TV's, and the few that were made for audio didn't have the programming for my receiver since it was so old. I knew that the original manufacturer's replacement remotes were usually one hundred dollars or more. Then I came upon the Logitech Harmony remotes. I was fascinated. This 720 cost around the same amount of money as a replacement for my one device, and it would run all of my gear. Then I saw the refurbished model and knew it was time; when mine arrived you couldn't tell it from a brand new one.

What is important to know for those who are new to this series of harmony remotes is how they work. First you connect your remote to your computer with the included USB cable. Then you go online and sign up with Logitech, as in user name and password, that way your gear settings are kept up to date. While logged in you start listing all of your gear. Which make and model receiver do you have, what about your CD player, television, DVD player, and any other gear you may have? Logitech has amassed a huge database. Even my 20 year old receiver was in there. Then on the next page, you create your events. Let's say you want to enjoy watching TV with your satellite, or cable receiver turned on, your TV turned on, and your audio receiver turned on and tuned to a specific input selection, as well as having your TV set to channel 3 or 4 for the proper channel of your satellite receiver. You simply group these devices together in one event, and after creating all of your different events, Logitech downloads into your remote all of the settings to run all of your gear, including the events you have chosen. So for another example, if you wanted to listen to music, you could choose to turn on your receiver and your CD player. One touch, one button and the entire event is orchestrated for you. Oh yes, and when you are done, one off button touch, and it is all turned off for you as well.

Since the individual devices are downloaded into your remote, you can very easily control each individual device as well. With the large well lit LCD screen, you can easily see an icon and text description of each piece of your gear. With one button you highlight that individual piece of equipment, and then the remote is a dedicated remote for just that piece of gear.

One more thing is that this thing is huge. The picture does not do it any justice. I thought it was going to be a small device, hard to read and operate. Not at all, it is very large, with a good sized LCD.

Some have commented on the difficulty of knowing that you have it in the self charging cradle for the built in rechargeable batteries. That is not a problem either. You just drop it in near the spot, and give it a slight push until it clicks in the trough, and watch the LCD create a gold light, with a new picture; you can do it easily even in the dark.

So if you need a new remote, don't go buying a cheaply made replacement, for about the same price you can get a refurbished 720. I can only imagine what the 1100 would do.

I upgraded fron a Harmony 670. Couldn't have been easier. Plugged it in and within a few keystrokes it had transfered all my settings over. With the 670 it didn't light up until you had pressed a button. The 720 lights up as soon as you move it. The lighting could be a little brighter but not enough to make me any less happy with it has a whole.

Programming was very easy but for daily use, the buttons need be more durable and larger. This is my first logitech remote therefore, I haven't compared it to the other models. I'm using this one for my home theater, but will start reading reviews and looking at other logitech models for my bedroom and family room systems.

My main concern with any universal remote was how it handled aspect ratios. It was easy to assign it with the various arrow buttons.

There are a few quirks that is mostly operator error. Whenever someone changes from watch tv or other modes, it will turn off the tuner. Since the tuner is the main unit, changing modes sends the off/on signal. I have to train the user to use the main power off first before they switch modes. As I mentioned before, the main buttons including power are too small for every day use.

i got mine last night. Here's a preliminary review:

easy remote setup on their website, i just wrote down the model numbers of my 6 components, and then walked through setup of each one. It took only an hour or so. Once the update was downloaded to the remote, it was a pretty easy process to learn the remote. Within a short time I was able to operate all my components/activities without any problems. Activity based remote use is a godsend!

The only problem i had in setup was some of the ir commands not working correctly, however, that was easily overcome by the easy remote command ir learning process on their site.

I do have a little bit of setup left to do - reassigning buttons/commands to places that are more intuitive for me.. So there will be a bit of a refining process.

So far i love this remote, and the TV Guide feature on the remote is coming in more handy than i thought it would..

I had a universal remote to control all of my components and it worked but it took a long explanation to anyone who wanted to use it.

The 768 spells everything out in easy to understand English like "Watch a DVD" or even "Watch Yanks in HD" that control all of the components so that you arrive at your end goal even if you have no idea what steps are needed to setup all the gear.

The support is great too. I had initial troubles getting it setup and was concerned that they may not have weekend support hours but they did! I got right through and the gentleman I spoke with was able to go into my account and clean up the problem.

I sometimes wish it had dedicated directional buttons the different "modes" work well enough.

I cannot reccomend this remote highly enough, especially for the price Amazon has it for right now.

Logitech may make and sell some decent remotes. This is not one of them. I have had a brand new 659 for over a year and I have yet to get it to work. After many hours of emailing and talking to staffers at Logitech I am no better off today than I was last year other than being out a few bucks. If you buy one and can install it without technical help you might have a remote that works. If you need help, just do not do anything. You will be wasting your time. I did. To say their suppor was inferior would be an understatement of significant magnitude. After about 10 emails, 6 telephone calls and 5 different installation disks I still do not have a remote that works. Would I buy again? Absolutely not. I will be needing a new mouse soon but you can be sure it will not be a Logitech only because of this episode. If you will not fix your product the 21st time I see no reason to buy anything else from a company such as this.

Pros:

- Nice LCD screen.

- Can put wallpaper on the background of the LCD (superfluous).

- Configuration software *looks* nice.

- Has support for a lot of devices.

- Can set up complicated tasks/activities on one button.

- Rechargeable.

Cons:

- Expensive.

- Software requires an internet connection to use (unnecessary!)

- Software is not for beginners.

- Doesn't seem to be a way to (easily) move commonly used device functions to the beginning of the list, so some functions require you to go through 10 pages to get to what you want!

- Configuration is tied to your Logitech user account, not stored on the remote, so if you lose your account, you have to start all over.

- Half of the time, an activity doesn't complete, so you have to turn on a device manually or use the "help" feature of the remote (when a remote needs a "help" function, it's too complicated).

- After a year, the volume up button has stopped working.

- Seems to have a delay when pressing the buttons, so the device keeps registering button presses well after you have stopped (might be configurable in the settings).

He was able to program it so when you select "Play Xbox" it turns on the Xbox, turns the tv on (if it was off), turns the tv to the correct input, and changes the receiver to the correct spot. The Good: Supports just about every brand available and never goes obsolete. Well designed ergonomic fit for the hand. Easy access to all functions and features. Great full color touch screen display and function. Intuitive commands throughout. Available free customer phone support for 90 days after purchase. Auto shut off and wake up feature. Rechargeable battery and charger.

The Bad: Initial setup is a breeze, but it can need a little to a lot of fine tuning depending on your components and tech savvy. Software isn't always an A B C process for problem solving. No RF (only a problem for some people)

Overall: Like most people looking for universal remotes, I found myself with too much clutter and simply tired of switching remotes for every device I wanted to use. After some detailed homework and comparison (Cnet has a great video and review on this) I picked up the Harmony One. I found its layout and design much friendlier than remotes costing both more and less and the features are second to none. The programmable actions really keep button pressing and device switching to a minimum, yet you can easily access any independent device via the touch screen. It has no RF, but in my living room that's not a problem as all my devices are in line of sight. Using the software can take a little time and tweaking depending on what your setting up (my Samsung TV was finicky with HDMI inputs at first) but there were no issues that I couldn't easily solve myself with a little common sense or a simple web search. All in all, I would highly recommend this remote to anyone trying to reduce the clutter and streamline their command center. For an average price of around 200 bucks, I didn't find anything on the market that wrapped up so many nice things in such a clean package. Even the wife likes this one.

The device itself is nice:

- per-devices and the better per-activity programming

The problem comes from the software.

** Short version:

works only while connected to Internet - all your data is save remotely - soft bugs ahead - inconvenient soft.

** Longer version:

I thought I'll do the programming once and for all, using the software only once. But there are always some refinements that have to be performed in activities, to match exactly your needs - a way that is convenient. And also to cope with the internal firmware design flaws (for instance the high inter-key delay - which is sent to the devices *before* the command signals, and even if you press only one key that interacts with only once device, one command...).

The first bad surprise comes from the lack of installation customization... the installation that "take care of everything on your behalf" (different path? options?).

Then you'll learn that you have to be connected to the Internet unconditionally, to create a remote account, and to program the device - all the data is stored remotely. Nothing local...

After you struggle with the poor interface and its bugs, you pay attention before clicking anywhere... Eventually you'll complete the programming and transfer your work to the device itself - and try it.

If it is not exactly what you want, but close enough, you'll decide to keep it that way...

After some time, the inconvenience of your own previous programming mistakes counter-balances the software inconvenience and persuades you to give it another try. And for some reasons, there is no way to connect to the maker's server (like it happened to me and many others - google it). Did you do anything special with your Win XP? Nope. Probably a bad day.

The support provides an automatic answer saying that, roughly, "you have to reinstall the soft ... this is how we work here", and if you are in luck, you will retrieve your data (again: no local copy / access).

This is where I decided to make this review.

(I spared you details like software updates, fixing some bugs and creating bigger ones. It looks like the software is made by a bunch of trainees managed by a fortune-teller).

This is a must have if you have many brands of equipment in your home theather. I have three kids ages 8 and down and they know exactly which button to press to play video games, to watch a DVD or to watch tv. Takes some time to set up but is very friendly. The only con is that it is too fragile, I have bought four units in the past 2 years since the buttons got stuck on three of them and one got the screen broken. Overall, I don't mind buying one every six months since it does everything I need it to.

For $99 this should be a much better remote. If you watch movies in the dark, you have to use the glow button, guess what, you will have to replace the batteries once a month at least. Also, Logitech has over simplifed the remote. You can't program individual buttons you have to use their program that only allows you to program devices and not the remote directly. If you have to go into the device menu a lot you will not be able to control the volume unless you switch to the device that controls volume. Why not have an option to program each button period... But the remote is useless now because of the low battery life. Do not buy this unless you want to buy batteries every month. Ridiculous. Only remote I have ever had like this.

It is very hard to update the remote. Very seldom we can delete and if there are two DVR boxes remote get confused and keep on turning off and on, even though we choose the right one such as A or B.Software update is cumbersome and take 45 minutes on a Intel Quad computer with 2 G memory. Can supply some patches. I have the remote sitting on my coffee table useless.

This is a very easy universal to program, just hook it up to your computer. Enter the product name and model number, answer a few questions on a very user friendly screen and you're done. The best thing is that it works with TiVO, it even has the up and down thumb buttons. All in all this remote has given me no problems and has been a dream for the past 6 months. I have the 628 controlling a TV connected to the following:

Cable - through the tuner

Satellite - via comp. video

DVD - via hdmi

PC - via pc input

The system works fine until I select tuner(cable) it then loses track of which input it is on. I then have to find the TV remote and correct the input problem. I works again until I go to cable.

The set up software is awful (I am a software engineer - I expect software to be usable by a novice).

I am waiting for a response from Logitech.

"Harmony is Great - This one has fewer buttons" 2008-10-06

I have three different Harmony remotes -- I'm a big fan. This one is in my bedroom. Of the three that I have (880, 659, 628), this is my least favorite. Why? It's missing a few hard buttons that I miss, and the remaining buttons have a layout that I have a hard time remembering. Let me elaborate.

First, as I indicated above, I'm a big fan of Harmony Remotes. You can program them to do everything that any of your devices' IR remotes can do. In general, the dedicated buttons on the remote are enough to handle the tasks that you do 90% of the time. Less frequently used functions can be configured to appear on the LCD screen, which displays 4 (or 6 - it's configurable) items at a time, and can scroll. For really seldom-used functions, everything that the device's remote can do is accessible in "Device" mode.

I have never had any trouble with the website's programming applets. Some folks hate them, but I'm not one of them. There have been occasions where I have had to try a configuration, and go back to tweak it, because it wasn't working exactly the way I wanted it to. I would rather do this on my computer, using the website's huge database of devices and IR codes, than to try to program it manually, the way I used to have to do with older universal remotes.

I also do not have the problems that some other folks complain about where the device state gets out of sync. I always program my devices using what they call "discrete codes", where there's a different command for "On" and "Off", instead fo a single "Toggle Power" command, and different commands for TV input selection. I never have to try to find the discrete code settings, even if they're not provided by the device's original remote, because Logitech's online device database already has all of the discrete codes for all of my devices stored and ready for me to use.

The Harmony 628, in particular, is my least favorite of the three Harmony remotes we have. It is missing dedicated buttons for "Exit", "Menu", and "Info". I use all three of these regularly, so I ended up configuring them as items on the LCD. This isn't too horrible, although it's a little inconvenient. The other issue I have with this remote is that I just can't seem to figure out the button layout. When I'm watching TV, if it's dark in the room, I can never find the Play, Stop, Pause, FFwd and Rev buttons. They're always in the same place, of course, but it's just never where I expect. I always end up having to turn on the backlight.

Overall, this is a solid remote, at the inexpensive end of the awesome Harmony line. If your remote usage does not involve the "Menu", "Info" or "Exit" buttons, then bump my rating up by one. For my uses, though, this device is OK, but not great.

I have had various universal remotes, and this is decent but wont solve all your problems. Plus the light broke after about a year, though they did replace it. Main problem is that the remote still doesnt know what the TV/Reciever/Sattelite is actually set to. So when inevitibly there is some timing issue or a command is missed, its all out of whack. And with IR its going to happen unless you point it at each device every time. Wish it was all RF. Also i still had to program keys on my remote. Critical keys for satellite DVR were not represented, especially the commercial skip

I spent 6 hours and 37 minutes on the phone (includeds hold time) with Logitech support to figure out the issues I was having with the remote. Finally at one point it would no longer update. They diagnosed it as a bad internal memory and I sent it back to Amazon.

I ended up buying the H659 and have been happy with it, although the extra couple buttons (compared to the 628) are useless for my setup, so I spent an extra $20 more for nothing. To be fair, the time with support mentioned above included helping me getting minor problems worked out with the 659.

I will say this about Logitech support. I called 4 times, once for something minor, and the folks in their Tier 1 support in Las Vegas ALWAYS transferred me to Tier 2 support in Toronto. Vegas knows little and was of no value. Toronto on the other hand has a very polite and very sharp support staff. Omar and Melissa in particular were fantastic. My only complaint is I waited 2, 26, 42, & 51 minutes on hold waiting for Tier 2 to answer. Actually, the 2 minute wait was nothing, but the wait time averaged 30 minutes on hold over my four calls.

I'm now using the H659 and I'm happy with it's performance. I suspect the 628 could have made me just as happy if I had stuck with it. I think the memory issue is isolated so I didn't kill the product with a poor rating.

I've owned this remote for 3.5 years. Prior remotes have ranged from the Radioshack 1594 & Kameleon jp1 computer-programable remotes, to the Sony rm-vl900. This was my first Harmony, and it's one tough unit. It was dead-easy to program using the web interface (try programming a Radio shack using a home-built jp1 plug adapter, macros and an excel spreadsheet! THAT'S difficult!).

My wife can actually *almost* operate all of our Panasonic AV-receiver/TiVO/SageTV & Girder HTPC/Philips DVD/SliMP3/Xbox360/PS2 components. And that's saying something -- she really dislikes gadgets. But she gets enough function out of it

But the 688 shines when my son can operate our array of boxes. He's been doing it since he was 2! Now he's 5 and just learning to read, and he's better at operating everything than my wife is. Plus, I can't count the number of times the 688 has bounce off of the floor or been dropped by him -- even chewed on once by our dog! -- and it's never failed to work. Yes, it's case is cracked. And missing the lens on the IR recevier at the heel (still working last I sucked in an IR code from another remote). And the labels on some of the most-used buttons are fading a bit. And all the silver coloring has come off of the bottom, where it contacts your hand. But it still does the job and functions just fine thank you.

The only reason that I'm looking at replacing it now (with another 688) is because one of the falls in the last 6mos or so seems to have broken the usb interface on it, and I can't program in a new activity that I'd like to add.

I've looked at the range of current offerings, including the Harmony 880. But to be honest, life is too short to wrestle with marginal charger interfaces. I figure I use a set of AA bats every 3-4 weeks. That's much less hassle and much more dependable than diddling with balancing an 880 on a fiddley charger base.

So, another 688H it is! And, it appears to be running for half what I paid for my first one. Good value, even three years later.

For folks that complain about the component's On/Off values getting out of synch in the remote (which my wife & son do and have learned how to correct): it's generally a simple matter of covering the IR emitter while pressing OFF, and then turning off the components (via the Device menu, or manually on the boxes). That will bring everything back into sync in an OFF state.

I had another Harmony remote that was a lower model. The other had the controls for play, rewind, etc on the very bottom of the remote which was a little awkward since we use them all the time with our DVR. This one has the buttons placed much better, but there are enough downsides that I actually like our other, cheaper model better. The buttons are harder to find on this one and the material they are made out of is different and the buttons are much harder to push and get a response from. The multi-directional circular button is particularly hard to press and deal with. The glow button doesn't stand out very easily and is hard to find in the dark and that makes finding all the buttons difficult in the dark. The different color covers is cool if you have a room like we do that's in black and red, but for most people it's no big deal because the standard silver looks the best.

I was looking for a universal remote and found the Harmony 676. At first I liked it a lot but the buttons were too similar in size and shape to work in the dark, and I kept pressing the wrong buttons. That wasn't the worst. After awhile the fast forward button quick working for the DVR. I ended up having to go back and use the original remote with my cable box. While I think Logitech is a good brand, I think this particular model does not hold up well even in light to moderate use. I would not recommend it.

I've had this for a couple of years now, and I'd say it was a good purchase. The Harmony 676 has all of the features you can expect in a semi-expensive universal remote. It's computer programmable, lights up a nice blue color, works with every device you can throw at it, and fits nicely in your hand. What's nice about this one versus previous remotes I've owned is it's really good on batteries, I've only had to change them twice in two years!

The only gripe I have is the software that comes with it is a bit buggy on a Mac, and doesn't seem to be updated that often. Aside from that, it's a good buy.

Just got this, based on the fact that I was juggling four remotes (TV, Blu-Ray, AV Receiver, Satellite) on a daily basis and it was getting old. Tried this one based on the low entry price (refurbished). It is everything it's advertised to be. Downloaded the software, opened it, plugged the remote into my Mac, entered the model numbers of my devices, it uploaded from the website, and everything worked. Then I added custom keys (source, audio, chapter previous and chapter next) for various devices using the IR port and those worked. The device now does everything I need it to do. And if the refurb one dies, I know that I can buy another (or spring for a new model) and it will work as expected. Now I'm sorry I waited so long to buy one of these.

I wanted so much to like my Harmony; however, it has been discarded along with my Compaq Intel 286 laptop. It took many weeks of back and forth with Logitech just to get the software disk to get the device to work and then I found myself asking for bailout funds to afford batteries. It went through batteries faster than my SUV goes through a tank of gas. Actually a tank of gas lasts longer than the AA batteries.

Forget that. The device is just not worth the hassle. If Logitech has any other remotes that work I'd love to try them but this one is a born loser. Sorry. Just don't do it.

This remote was purchased mostly out of curiosity. It has turned out to be a favorite. Setup was easy - run the software and follow the steps. There are a few settings I would change, but it works just fine after the first setup.

The main thing I like is the strength of the beam. Our Comcast remote has to be aimed very carefully, which is awkward because the cable box is low, behind some furniture. The Harmony only has to be pointed in the general direction, not even with line-of-sight to the cable box.

The Harmony trademark keys do have a nice feel, but the button labels are a little hard to read because of the small type and their rounded, glossy surface. The back light, helpfully activated by a key with different texture, is a big advantage to reading the other key functions.

The HELP function is pretty nice, if only because the Harmony doesn't know if individual equipment is already on or off when it runs the command sequence, and doesn't have separate (discrete) IR commands for on or off.

I had no problems related to the fact that my purchase was refurbished. I could not even tell. I do not know all the reasons remotes get to be refurbished, so buyer beware...

I have three different Harmony remotes -- I'm a big fan. In fact, I pre-ordered this remote when I read an article about its upcoming release, because I was so excited about the prospect of a universal remote that actually worked. This remote has lived up to its promise.

First, as I indicated above, I'm a big fan of Harmony Remotes. You can program them to do everything that any of your devices' IR remotes can do. In general, the dedicated buttons on the remote are enough to handle the tasks that you do 90% of the time. Less frequently used functions can be configured to appear on the LCD screen, which displays 4 (or 6 - it's configurable) items at a time, and can scroll. For really seldom-used functions, everything that the device's remote can do is accessible in "Device" mode.

I have never had any trouble with the website's programming applets. Some folks hate them, but I'm not one of them. There have been occasions where I have had to try a configuration, and go back to tweak it, because it wasn't working exactly the way I wanted it to. I would rather do this on my computer, using the website's huge database of devices and IR codes, than to try to program it manually, the way I used to have to do with older universal remotes.

I also do not have the problems that some other folks complain about where the device state gets out of sync. I always program my devices using what they call "discrete codes", where there's a different command for "On" and "Off", instead fo a single "Toggle Power" command, and different commands for TV input selection. I never have to try to find the discrete code settings, even if they're not provided by the device's original remote, because Logitech's online device database already has all of the discrete codes for all of my devices stored and ready for me to use.

The Harmony 659, in particular, is a solid performer. The button layout is a little bit odd, in that the transport controls (Play, Stop, Pause, Rewinde, etc.) are all located all the way on the bottom. This can be a little awkward, but ithasn't really caused me too many problems. Also, they are laid out such that I don't have to think about which button is where - the button I'm looking for is always right where I think it ought to be, even though it's a bit of a reach for my thumb. This model does not have all of the buttons that are available in some of the more expensive models (when I was trying to use this for a DVR, I missed the "Skip Fwd" and "Skip Bkwd" buttons), but where I'm using it right now, it has all of the dedicated buttons I need.

Overall, this is a solid remote, at the inexpensive end of the awesome Harmony line. I've recommended Harmony remotes to everyone who's faced remote problems. If your usage patterns require additional buttons that aren't provided on this model, there's almost certainly a model that has those buttons. For the room where we use this remote, it works great.

I purchased the 890 when I went on vacation and had a friend stay at my house. The Harmony 880 I had was so quirky that I was afraid she will be completely lost so I got the 890 for a trial. So far so good. The 890 is much faster and much more reliable than the 880. The online software download is still just as quirky but usually it is a one time set up so that is not a big deal. Would recommend this to anyone who needs to control multiple devices in one room and maybe one more room. For multi-room configurations, this most likely won't work as well.

I needed a remote to control the TV via IR and the Cable box, DVD player and AV receiver in another room. It came with the IR blaster. Everything was well packaged, software installed very easily and the initial set up seemed to go well. Once I started using it, it took me a while to figure out that there were some glitches - really because I didn't know what I was doing the first time round. Once I figured out exactly what I wanted it to do and played around with the set up software, it was a breeze. If for whatever reason the remote doesn't do what you expected it to do (eg; didn't turn on receiver when you pressed watch TV), it has a nice help feature that asks you device by device what is not on (or off) and then retries the commands. I've now replaced four seperate remotes with one.

I've had this remote for about a year. If you are a true expert with electronic gadgets, willing to spend considerable time (>2hrs) working through a complex maze of programming steps, enjoy spending 10's of minutes waiting on-line for tech support help or drafting long complicated emails when the enevitable problems arise, are not daunted when the product doesn't work as advertised, then this product is for you because, when it works, it is an excellent product.

Already I've had the well-known charging problem. The pain and agony getting through this with a new charger is half a book. Now the new charger has arrived and solves the charging problem, but now my extender won't upload the new settings. Here we start the entire cycle again.

The bottom line is that I would never have purchased such an expensive item had I known how poor the service was and difficult it was to use.

The Logitech Harmony 890 has been a great experience so far. If you're looking for the ultimate universal remote experience, this is where you search ends.

However, there were a couple cons, mostly dealing with setting up the device. Mac owners out there, yes there is software that works, however, there is a pesky bug. Every once in a while, my keyboard strokes would suddenly stop working. A quick restart of the program remedied the problem, but it did become annoying after the 4th or 5th time restarting the software.

Setting up the remote was pretty painless... except my HDTV (40" RCA from Walmart) isn't necessarily the most friendly TV to deal with. For one, although it does show up in the software, it does not work with my TV. I had to manually learn the functions through RAW mode (beaming the original remotes signal to the 890), and even so, controlling the volume on the TV doesn't work well. And, in my current situation, I did not wish to set up the RF Extender, and even though I told the software that everything would be IR, it still asks me to sync the RF extender. Minor annoyances...

However, I do see the great potential both in the software and in the beautiful remote. Everything works well, and Activities are genius. I give the remote 5 stars because the biggest culprit is my whack TV, which hopefully I will replace sooner than later.

We had this remote before and my husband had worn it out. I was very excited when I saw the price on Amazon.com. We paid a lot more for our first remote than what we purchased our replacement. I am not very technical and I was wanting one remote easy to use for all our electronic needs. I LOVE how if I mess up it walks me thru the steps to fix it. I love having that happen before he gets the remote back in his hands. It is so easy to follow even our grandaughter who is 6 can operate it without a problem. This remote works well, and i'd never go back to having 4 different remotes to control my AV setup. It's also shaped kinda like the Tivo remote and has a bunch of similarly placed buttons.

The batteries that came with mine were horrible and lasted about two weeks. I almost returned it then, but i gave it another shot with some costco Kirkland brand alkalines and it probably lasts 5 or 6 months with them.

It also doesn't feel terribly durable, mine rattles because something came loose inside, but it doesn't seem to have affected performance.

I'm happy enough with it, but would probably buy a higher end harmony if i had to do it all over.

I loved this remote --- that is:

1.after I programed it which took nearly an entire day and much frustration. I have utilized computers for nearly three decades and I am quite computer literate and it took me that long. Also, you may need your old remotes to activate the universal. We did not have one and that posed problems that we could never overcome.

2. Until it broke. Just outside the warantee period the volumn, channel change and power buttons quite working. An item this expensive should last longer.

I was somewhat hesitant about buying one of these. They are kind of pricey but since my universal remote for my receiver died I didn't have much choice. I went with this somewhat cheaper model. Overall, this is a good product. After the somewhat lengthy programming process (which is still fairly easy) the remote does an even better job at controlling devices than my old universal. It's activity oriented so if you want to watch a blu-ray it will turn on the blu-ray, the TV and tune to the right input if needed, and the receiver and set it to the right input too. You can do this with numerous activities. On the downside, mine died after about a year but customer support was really great. I submitted a claim online and they followed up via email in less than 2 days. After answering their questions they decided my remote was dead and are sending me a new (or refurbished - not sure) one. In short, this makes controlling multiple devices really easy. If you have a newer receiver with a universal remote you may not need this, but if you find yourself using several remotes to turn on and control everything, and you constantly have to explain it all to the wife, then one of these can make life easy and your wife happy. I only deducted one star for what I consider an early death since customer support was great.

I was hesitant at first to buy this remote. I was reading reviews where people said the battery life was horrible, and that really scared me. Well I decided to make the purchase anyways seeing how the refurb was just so inexpensive. I am soo glad I did. i have had the remote for 6 weeks now, still on original batteries and everything is working great. The remote feels good in the hand. The buttons feel good and a few of them click like the volume and channels, which is nice. One feature of this remote that I didn't count on is the super strong infrared on here. I don't even need to point the remote at the devices I want to control, somehow the IR still hits them. That was really nice to have. It took me about an hour to program. Now that that is done, it is making our lives easier.

I guess it's not completely fair to say this universal remote by Logitech is child's play to operate. Loading the correct codes requires a fair amount of techie knowhow. The directions are pretty clear (don't get me wrong on that) but I'm sure there are some folks that would plug their Ethernet cable into their toilet and wonder why they can't get to the net!

Anyways, setup a pretty routine process, even for newbies who have never had to use an internet/ computer combination to program their remote before. The illuminated buttons are very helpful, especially for night time TV viewing. You can program about 12 devices at once which is pretty convenient plus when you hit one button, all programmed devices that correspond to that command turn on or off at the same time. I've got a Samsung 46" set in my living room w/ a Samsung 5.1 speaker system, a Sharp Blu Ray DVD player and an HD DirecTV receiver. Two clicks will let me watch TV, a DVD or just listen to the radio. FANTASTIC!! It was a great bargain as well ([...]).

I have used my share of uni-motes but this remote by Logitech is by far the coolest and most convenient. Once programmed, it's a snap to show the next person how to use it. And just so we are clear, programming the codes will be the hardest part!!

If you are into having complete control in the palm of your hands, I highly recommend you invest in this remote!

Pros: Fully backlit, Good battery life, Support for a multitude of devices & this is a lower end Harmony!!!, Nearly unlimited commands & places to put them, Lcd & buttons next to it offer easy access to standard & advanced commands.

Cons: Number pad is too small & awkwardly located, Volume & Channel buttons (same reasons), Set-up can be involved, not friendly for the technically challenged (involves set-up using a computer software interface & lots of tweaking).

Other Thoughts: My Vizio 47XVT had a terrible, unlit remote & I never placed stock in "do-it-all" multimedia remotes.

I never knew what I was missing. This remote does it all. I currently have it controlling my Vizio, Xbox 360 Elite, Samsung BD-P1600, Sony DVP-NS710H, & Sony STR-DH800 A/V receiver. The Activities feature is very nice, one button turns on devices to be used, does input selection, & turns off devices not in use. Between the 4 devices I am using there were only 1 or 2 commands that I had to "teach" it from the OEM remotes.

I consider myself to be technically inclined, but set-up can be very involved. For example, I had trouble gettin my hdtv to go to the proper input. The end result was adding end Activity commands to switch them (this was prior to adding the A/V receiver). The receiver handles all of the hdmi switching now.

Overall, setup took me a couple of hours. That involved tweaking power delays, start-up sequences/delays, & some end activity tweaking for each of my 4 Activities. This remote is not for anyone who simply wants to enter a device code & call it soup. It is for a true control freak!!

This remote worked as promised but compared to the later models it falls short of expectations. I also have the Harmony one and it is head and shoulders better than the 550. If you absolutly need a remote and cannot pay extra for a newer model than this will suffice.

I've been using my SST-659 for 5 years. It solved my family's problems with using multiple remote controls, as I have a lot of devices from different manufacturers that have to be turned ON or OFF, switched to different inputs/outputs, select various modes, depending on current activity configuration. My 8 years old and my 'technology chalenged' wife have no problems using the remote and even if they do, they just press HELP button, answer the questions asked by the remote and they're back to business. If the remote fails one day, I will not hesitate a second to get another Harmony.

Definately recommend this remote. I gave it to my parents for Christmas, and they actually use it! It properly controls their cable box, HDTV, CD player, Radio, and another TV in the kitchen. ...So simple to use- I'm definately getting one for all my gear.

Coolest part, is that there's no control for any of the equipment that is lost. You can find a way to control everything through the intuitive LCD menu.

This is THE most idiotproof gadget I've encountered.

I've been looking for something like this for awhile. An AFFORDABLE completely programable remote. All you do is plug it into your PC, tell the program the make and model of your devices, and what you want it to turn on when you do an activity like "watch a DVD". Then one button sets everything up for you. Then, if you want, you can customize any button to do what ever you want, even add virtual buttons, all thru the PC using pull-down menus. SO EASY. This thing even works with my 25 year old equipment and my DVD Recorder. AWESOME.

I bought this remote refurbished, downloaded the latest version of the remote's software from the Logitech support website via my laptop, and plugged my remote into my laptop with the provided USB cable. Immediately, I was impressed by the ease of setting up the remote using Logitech's software. Their software includes a very detailed, step-by-step wizard that pretty much anybody can use - it doesn't get any easier than this!

With some fairly obscure hardware (Dynex TV, Insignia Blu-ray player, ancient Sony receiver) in my home theater setup, I was nervous that the remote wouldn't recognize one or more of the components, but my fears were quickly alleviated when the Logitech software found all the settings for all my devices by simply typing in the model name for each of the devices.

When I had an issue with my Dynex TV not switching to the correct input, I plugged the remote back into my laptop with the USB cable and used the Logitech troubleshooting guide to program the remote to switch the input correctly. The learning feature on the remote worked perfectly - I was able to use my original remote from my TV to program the Logitech remote to perform the correct function. The depth of programmability that this remote offers is quite astounding.

All in all, I am extremly impressed - hopefully the remote itself holds up well over time. The remote itself is a little lightweight compared to some other remotes, and I could see it getting broken if I whacked it on a hard surface or the dog carried it off and drooled on it, but as long as I keep it safe, I think it will be fine.

I bought this remote for myself with Sprint Rewards points a few months ago. It took me a few weeks of use to get used to the buttons, they're kind of 'clickey' in that it takes a bit more effort to push them that the sort of spongey buttons on other remotes take. Now that I've had it for some time and have refined the programming on it, I don't think that I could go back to a standard universal remote or, even worse, multiple remotes.

I have several game consoles, a gen one Xbox that I run XBMC on, and this controls it well. It even can control my air conditioner. Programming the remote couldn't be easier, but setting up the soft keys next to the screen could use a bit of refining, it would also be nice to be able to program some of the functions from the remote, rather than connecting it to the PC. The only other nice thing would be to allow charging the remote via USB.

I was so impressed with this remote, especially it's price, that I bought one for my parents.

Program setup can be very difficult depending on devices. Learning old remotes is not easy at all with some,but not others. Customer support is good and helpful. I had to have their support.

Do I like it now? Yes, I do, very much. I don't have any regret of buying Harmony 880. It is a good lucking design also. So far I have no cradle problem. This cradle seems to have spring loaded gold plated contacts which is desirable. If the springs become weak, I will have proble also.

I got this when the refurbished version cost about $80, which was a real bargain. For those concerned about buying a refurbished item, your concerns are valid only if the manufacturer support is poor. Read mine and countless other customer reviews and you will see that Logitech's support is beyond reproach. I received mine with a fault. The gyroscope, which allows the remote to sense movement and so "wake" the display, did not work. So I called support. They looked up the unit and established the date it was bought and the fact it was a refurbished model and I had a new remote 3 days later. Best yet, I did not have to return the original unit, they simply had me register the new unit (which worked perfectly) a process which disabled the original unit. Since I got this for less than half of what a new unit costs, I see this as a minor issue, not worth docking a star for.

I have five devices used with this system - a TV, a PS3, a DVR, a DVD player and an AV amplifier. One thing worth mentioning is that this unit sends IR commands only, so it will not control a PS3 which uses bluetooth. You can buy products that will recieve IR and convert to bluetooth if you wish. Other than that, I can control all my other devices without a single function missing. In fact, in the case of my TV, I actually am able to perform functions that my original, supplied remote does not. I was able to set up basic control of all devices using presets in the online database - so I basically searched for the make/model of each device, selected it and it prepogrammed the remote with all the functions mapped to the correct keys.

I spent a little time editing some of the presets. Just for personal preference, but I found more convenient button mappings that once again improved my level of control from the original remote. I also experimented with faster delay settings so that switching between devices was faster. These involve macros that can be conveniently named, "Watch TV" or "Play Game" etc. During these, multiple commands fire in sequence and you must keep the unit pointed at your devices for them to work correctly. Not to worry if you don't one time - simply press the "Help" button and the remote guides you through a little troubleshooting menu that gets you back on track.

I have also had the unit learn commands not included in the presets. This involves pointing the original remote at the base of the Harmony so that it can sense you activating the needed command and program it into the software. You then name your command and map it to a key. You can also rename existing commands in the presets - useful for adding to the keys on the sides of the LCD display which label command buttons that do not correspond to standard remote buttons. Consider this useful if you have a device with red, blue, yellow and green keys for example. These buttons are useful, though in a perfect product they would be a bit more responsive. They sometimes feel like you have pressed them, but nothing happens. Other models do not have this issue, but you pay much more for the privilege.

I did not have any charger worries (as some have had), and have had this for nearly a year without any other issues but the gyro problem. Since this was resolved with absolute haste, I do not see this as a con. I also had Logitech's excellent support help with my TV's odd setup, and the timing of my DVR's commands (all of which are peculiarities of the device, not the remote) and the Harmony still works better than the original remote.

I simply cannot recommend this more highly. Since the price seems to have risen, I do not see it as quite the bargain it once was, but it is still more than worth the cost. Though it is not a "perfect" product, I see it as by far the best bang for the buck. Features on the more expensive models are those that most buyers will rarely, if ever need or are "niggles" that would be nice to have, but not worth the extra cost.

I already owned the Logitech Harmony 550 Advanced Universal Remote Control and although my family and I loved the concept of 'Activities', we just didn't like the feel of the flush Volume and Channel buttons. I bought this remote from Walmart for 99.00 a couple of years ago. I couldn't imagine not having this remote to operate my receiver, TV, XBOX, Blu Ray, Dish, etc. With this remote my 8 year old can easily setup his video games and his movies without calling me for help. Setup is a breeze by connecting to your computer via USB and logging onto the logitech website where you create a profile and list all of your electronics to be controlled with the remote. And this remote controls everything; ceiling fans, lights, you name it. The only issue I have is with the buttons sticking or even stop working all together. I sent mine back a few months ago and Logitech sent a replacement for free. I know its only a matter of time before the same thing happens to the replacement unit. I'll probably upgrade to the 670 or the 800 series if that happens. The buttons on the higher end units seem to be better.

"Disappointing" 2009-10-03

I have a Sony Bravia TV, an Xbox 360, a Yamaha AV Receiver, a simple cable box and a Zune HD AV cradle. I am a an engineer with many years experience of fiddling with technology gadgets. This would be simple I thought. After all, most of my equipment is new and I only have a few common units. Not so. This controller fails in basically every activity. The major problem appears to be to get the TV set to the correct input. Another huge disappointment is that this remote is so poor in controlling the Xbox 360. Logitech has had a Harmony Xbox 360 controller on the market for years now right? I thought they would have this down by now. For example, there are four colored buttons on the Harmony 700 remote as there is on the Xbox 360, my expectation was that these buttons were configured by default, but no, and there appears to be no way to get them to work either. This one is going back to the store. I would rather get up and get the individual controllers than to screw around with the help button on the Harmony 700 controller.

I've been a harmony fan for years. Used to have 2 650. I upgraded them to 700 and have been very happy.

I chose 700 because I wanted something that uses AA or AAA batteries. This remote is even better. It takes AA batteries and provides rechargable batteries with a charging head for me.

The design is also beautiful. And I always find it comfortable to hold it. Highly recommended.

I expected to just plug in the model numbers for my Panasonic TV, 2 Tivo's, DVD-VCR combo, and Netflix Box into the software and Logitech's database would find all of the right codes and program the remote for me. The database did not recognize either of my Tivo's and the software told me the remaining components provided no option for changing channels. Who ever heard of the TV remote that could not change channels. I then removed all of the components and started from scratch entering only the TV - even that did not work and required me to program many of the TV functions manually.

So with all of this frustration and knowimg my wife would never be able to use it and I would still have 5 remotes laying around, I packed it and shipped it back to Amazon after 1 day

One other little complaint - the printed labels under the buttons is very small. Difficult to read in normal TV watching lighting conditions. This certainly would pose a big problem until one learned what the different buttons do.

We have been living with an A/V setup in my family room with mostly new equipment--large LED TV, Samsung Blu-ray DVD with built-in Netflix streaming, Apple TV, and an A/V receiver to power all the sound. This remote has made everything easier to live with. Not only has it eliminated our remote clutter, it has actually solved quite a few niggling problems for us. It is also simple to use and even the kids and my husband are comfortable with it.

I don't have a cable set-top box or Tivo. I DO get a ton of digital stations on sub-channels via basic cable with the tuner on the TV. Due to the foibles of digital tv, every tv tuner tunes a bit differently, so my two digital tv's have different channels for the same stations. I was tired of remembering them all. Plus, it takes a bit longer to tune a channel with digital. If you make a mistake or need to hunt for a channel, it takes much longer than in the "old days" of analog. I went ahead a set up favorite channels to program in almost all the channels we watch regularly. I downloaded logos from a 3rd party site to use on the remote. Now we have cute logos on a screen to select from and they can be reordered and changed easily any time. No sub-channels to remember any more.

My blu-ray device works fine. Even Netflix streaming works. The buttons were not set up completely by default. I think I was missing the "red" button that would bring me to Netflix in one click. I bought this remote partially because it has the red, blue, yellow, green buttons that were familiar to us and we really need that red one for our Samsung. I called customer support to get walked through adding in that functionality. The agent surprised me with wonderful service. She started by asking what my user name in their system is. Then she asked me what I needed. Then she told me, "Okay--update your remote." I did and it worked! We get this service for 90 days with this product. I have no doubt that I could have called before I set anything up and had them do it for me, but I like to learn things and be somewhat self-reliant, so I did most of it by myself.

The Apple TV works better with this product. I did have to follow a faq that they link to in the setup program to "unpair" the device to make it be able to control the Apple TV. After I did this, the Harmony works BETTER than the remote that comes with the Apple TV. In our family room, our seating is fairly far from the Apple TV and the little remote that came with the Apple TV sometimes only worked if we moved closer. What a pain. The Harmony works very well.

I really like this product. The setup takes a bit longer than I expected so it lost a star for that. Also, the mac program doesn't look and work "mac-ish" and sometimes had glitches (I just quit and restart to make it work properly) so it lost a star for that. It is pretty easy to use the program after getting used to it, so I only took off the one star.

We just upgraded to an HDTV, with a Comcast HD box, a TIVO HD XL dvr, and an older DVD player so the thought of reducing the number of remotes to one was attractive. The remote came with very little real printed documentation and required a download of software from Logitech. My first attempt at 'programming' resulted in some things kinda working, but definitely nothing I could just give to my wife, who is not technically orientated and walk away. I would have liked something written with some examples and explanations to follow. There is some on-line help, but it's difficult to know whether information from the various other models apply to this unit.

The remote doesn't charge when connected to my laptop's USB port, like some other devices, a minus.

The remote comes with two Enerloop rechargeable batteries, a plus.

Definitely not an 'Enter your Device Code' and walk away type of unit, which ultimately may or may not offer more flexibility. Time will tell, meanwhile I'll keep the other remotes handy.

Will update with my progress, and when I finally let my wife try it, while I'm at work.

Easy to set up once I found all of the correct model numbers from my various components. The interface works great with customizable features if you want to take the time to set up new activities. The numerous remotes on my coffee table were about to drive my wife nuts and this little piece of electronics is responsible for restoring sanity to my life. This is my third Harmony remote; it is replacing a Harmony 880 that the kids spilled juice on. Most folks would say that I downgraded, but I didn't have more than 5 devices to connect to it and the price is what really pushed me to pick up this remote.

The other nice thing I like about Harmony is the software. I was able to transfer all my current settings I had programmed for my 880 with just a couple of mouse clicks.

If there was one thing that I could change on the remote would be enlarging the number keys.

I normally would not be the type to spend this much on a universal remote, but we received this Harmony as a gift. We've been using it for a while now and are quite happy with it.

Pros:

- easy to set up devices using the software

- even obscure devices are supported

- remote lights up whenever you go near it

- the help feature on the remote is very smart (actually is quite helpful in fixing problems)

- user-friendly. When we have guests over, there is no need to explain how to use it

Cons:

- ergonomics not so good. Doesn't fit smoothly in my hand

- buttons are too narrow. If you have fat fingers, you will have problems

- need a separate solution to control a Playstation 3

After owning this remote, I will likely be purchasing Logitech Harmony remotes going forward.

Pro: Very easy online programming using Windows XP. Programmed six items without a problem. Customized remote buttons but later realized the functions were programmed automatically during set up. Components include Onkyo 7.1 surround system (w/multiple listening modes), Panasonic blu-ray, Wii, Motorola HD receiver, Samsung HD TV, and InFocus HD projector. All functions translate nicely to this remote. Nice blue back-light glow. Help button available if needed.

Con: Size, balance and layout of remote require some getting used to. The unit is very thin and slick. The channel number buttons are somewhat small and located at bottom of remote. Takes some manual dexterity to operate with one hand. Would not recommend for the arthritic. Another idiosyncrasy is the need to continue to point the remote at the components while they turn on, makes sense, but takes getting used to.

Summary: Overall pleased with the device. Still getting used to the layout. If large buttons are needed, look elsewhere.

Logitech Harmony Remote Controls are fantastic. I can practically find any device in their software. My only problem with this particular model is the the black button set on the remote. These rubber buttons are quite difficult to press. I have to press them with my fingernails in order to get it send the command. Other harmony remotes have better buttons. Aside from the rubber buttons the remote is sleek, light and feels great.

This thing works great with my nearly-new Panasonic plasma and Panasonic Blu-ray player. It works semi-OK with my Scientific Atlanta digital cable box (forget your channel "favorites" because it can't find them, even though it detects the favorites button). If you happen to own an ancient Bose 3-2-1 as I do, expect this thing to send 2 signals to the device when you press the button on the remote once. In some cases that doesn't matter (hitting volume up or down is the same as hitting it twice, no biggie). In some cases it does matter: hitting mute sends one signal to mute the volume, immediately followed by another signal to un-mute the volume. Channel up (listening to a CD) skips past the next track, and channel down skips the previous track. A nice idea but it didn't work out for me; fumbling with multiple remotes is easier than the new hobby chore this turned out to be.

UPDATE

After consulting with a buddy who has a similar model and loves it, I found to my chagrin that a combination of user error (mine) and impatience (mine) was most of the problem. There is a LOT more in the configuration interface than appears at first blush. I dug deeper and found a ~90% soution for my Bose problem and several other issues that I found frustrating. I'm happy with this purchase and wish I could upgrade my rating to 4 stars. Apologies to anyone I misled with my earlier rant.

I remember the days when universal remotes required you to look up codes or hold a button combo while pointing the remote at whatever it is you wanted to control. then you had to hit different buttons to select each device. it reduced the number of remotes, but increased the number of things you had to do to make it all work. The Harmony series seeks to solve all of that. type in the model of your TV, receiver, amplifier, home theater PC, etc. and let the Harmony do the heavy lifting. setup activities like "Watch a DVD" and "Play Xbox" and watch as you hit one button and the remote changes to the right inputs, turns on what's needed for the activity and gets everything going. "Seriously User-Friendly...Great Remote!" 2009-10-01

First, a few disclaimers...I'm not a prior Harmony user so this is based solely upon the merits of this remote rather than compared to prior versions. As such, it is friggin awesome!

Like many households, we have multiple remotes and all kinds of problems with them. Just to watch a dvd requires three distinct remotes...one for the television, one for the stereo and one for the dvd. Worse, all of them are different and two have buttons in the exact opposite location so we are constantly turning the tv off when trying to adjust the volume.

About a year or so we began minimizing the technology clutter in the house - fewer wires and consolidating what we could without totally sacrificing quality. I had my eye on the Harmony line so when this offer came up, I jumped at it.

Immediately upon removing I was impressed by the ergonomics; felt equally nice in my hands as spouse...a rare event indeed! Next, the screen was REALLY easy to read even for middle aged eyes. Spouse is visually impared so the touch screen was a little challenging but buttons are clearly marked and well spaced so we are both happy!

Directions are nearly "idiot proof"...I confess to being one of those people that doesn't read directions and thankfully, I don't need to given how simple this is to use right out of the box. For more advanced features there is a bit more...however, it is well worth the effort since it allows "one touch" operation of things like turning on the television, leaving it on my favorite channel, turning on the stereo etc all at one time. I understand from prior reviews this may have undergone a transition but speaking as a first-time user...I'm totally satisfied.

Charge is simple - just put into the provided holder. It is a bit bright as I noticed it in the middle of the night but that same brightness makes is ultra-easy to read even in low light situations. Just keep in mind you may want to position it out of the direct line of sight at night.

Best for last...I saved the best feature for last and that is the ability to work through doors and walls. Between streaming music from the computer to the stereo, microwave ovens, wireless internet and much more I wondered if it would actually work. This is undoubtedly our favorite feature since we tend to use it a lot given where our electronics are located.

Bottom Line - GREAT Item!!! Reduces clutter, easy to use, simple navigation, is built to be used in modern households where electronics are scattered everywhere including behind doors. You do not need to be a technology guru to set this up and enjoy...in fact, buy it as a gift for someone you love and who needs to reduce clutter and operate electronics scattered around the house.

A+++ in my book!

This Remote is an odd duck. I upgraded from the Harmony One. (A fantastic Remote.)

The simple review is this: If you need the RF capability get this one. No question. If you only need IR, stick with the Harmony One.

For being twice the price of the One, I would have expected this remote to have no trade offs whatsoever.

It does have a few, but the biggest flaw was that I had to set up a new account all together and couldnt just upgrade, turning the setup process into an hour long event. (But an easy one.)

Also this remote seems to be a little slower compared to the One.

Then why 5 stars? Well if this is your first logitech remote, the set up doesnt matter (its still easy compared to other remotes) and the RF really is a great feature, for me worth the extra millisecond between screen switches. And gives me flexibility to stick components into cabinets if I so desire.

My PVR responds much better to the RF/blaster system, and nothing needs to be pointed precisely like before. I love it.

Logitech makes some of the best, easiest to use, universal remotes in the biz and this one is no exception.

Also, I expect the account upgrade and response time issues can easily be fixed with software patches in the near future.

I sent the 900 back and purchased a replacement. It too would not communicate with the MacBook, and it was impossible to reach Logitech support. Next time, I'll try a Universal Remote.

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who has tried for years to find a universal remote that actually works intuitively. At some point, I probably even forgot that was the goal and just looked for a remote that wouldn't be too awkward with whatever my current home theater setup was. The problem was that, even though my immediate family could remember which button mapped to which feature, I practically had to leave a written manual for baby-sitters, in-laws, and other guests. Unfortunately, the alternative was to have 4-5 remote controls that were all needed to control different functions - which is even worse than a bad universal remote in my opinion.

Anyway, my experience with Logitech universal remotes actually began with the Harmony One. I'll try to sum up my entire review by just saying that the Harmony One was the first truly intuitive universal remote I have ever owned. It is extremely comfortable in the hand, and can be used easily by guests without needing to give detailed instructions.

The reason I mentioned the Harmony One is that the Harmony 900 is basically the same remote with the additional RF functionality. The 900 does have a few minor feature improvements over the One and the interface seems just a bit more polished; but, it is close enough that I would still stick with the One if I didn't need the RF feature.

Here are the things I really like about both the Harmony One and 900 remotes:

1) Extremely intuitive - easily better than even the original remotes that came with my equipment

2) Very comfortable in the hand - The One and 900 have exactly the same profile and they both use the same charging base

3) I love that the backlight turns on automatically when the remote is moved, but it's also possible to control it by feel once you get used to the layout because of the way Logitech designed the buttons

4) It took a bit to get these programmed how I wanted them, but the software is easy to use and Logitech provides free phone support if you run into issues. Also, most of the codes from my OEM remotes were already in the online database.

5) Nice rechargeable base - the remote will go for a couple of days without a charge, but I try to stay in the habbit of leaving it on the base when it's not in use so I can always find it. :)

As I've been using the Harmony 900 remote, here are some of the improvements I've seen over the One:

1) The RF functionality is the most obvious improvement.

2) There are 4 additional colored buttons (red, green, yellow & red) that map perfectly to the buttons on my Xbox 360 controller.

3) The soft buttons can now use icons instead of just text and there is a good selection of icons to choose from. This is a really nice touch - and you can still use the text labels if you prefer them.

I suspect nothing is perfect, so here are the things that could be improved with the Harmony 900:

1) The biggest thing I wish Logitech would change is that a custom power-on command cannot be used for different activities. In my case, I'm using the Media Center Extender feature in an Xbox 360 to control my home theater system; so, in order to turn it on in that mode, I need to send the 'Media Center' command to the Xbox 360 instead of 'power-on'. Fortunately, there is a way to modify the power-on or off commands, but it is set at the device level so it impacts all the activities. This makes it impossible to have one activity for 'Play Xbox' and another for 'Media Center' and I end up combining both features into one activity (which isn't really ideal).

2) I was a little disappointed when I saw that I couldn't just upgrade from the Harmony One to the Harmony 900 in the Logitech software. I ended up having to create another account and then copied all my settings over manually - but at least I only have to go through that manual migration process once. With the remotes being so similar to each other, I'm really surprised that it's not possible to just upgrade from one to the other.

If you've made it this far, let me just sum up by saying that either one of these remotes really is worth the cost. In my opionion, it is the final touch for a home theater system that makes it much more enjoyable to use. In some ways, it is funny that people will spend thousands of dollars on an HDTV, DVD player, surround sound receiver, speakers, etc... - and then they have 4 different remotes sitting there so no one else can even figure out how to turn the system on to watch TV :).

Below is my original review. There is a small bug with the software, but I have found a work around until Logitech releases an official fix.

The Harmony 900 looks to continue the greatness of the Harmony line and for the most part it does not disappoint, but as one other reviewer already pointed out, those who are looking for the extra control that macros provide, will be thoroughly disappointed at Logitech's decision to remove this potentially useful functionality. Also, if you are upgrading from a previous Harmony, be prepared to go through the setup process all over again.

I was able to use my existing Harmony software that I currently use for my Logitech Harmony 670 Universal Remote without needing to use the provided CD in the package. However keep in mind that this remote is NOT compatible with older remotes meaning that it's not as simple as just moving your current configuration over to the new remote. The software however, immediately detects this and prompts you to create a new account for the new remote. After doing this, you have to go through the painstaking process of adding your devices and activities. However just like the Harmony 670 the process of adding devices/activities is quite simple. Unlike many universal remotes, Harmony remotes do NOT rely on entering archaic manufacturer codes. Instead Logitech has gone though the trouble of creating an extensive database that has thousands of devices. All you need to do is enter the model number of your device and chances are Logitech's database has that exact model meaning it already knows the exact buttons and functions of the manufacturer remote. In the RARE event it does not have the model number in their database, and then you can easily teach the Harmony the commands using the original remote. Even though the process of adding devices/activities is simple, it does take time and if you are upgrading it's a pain if you already did this previously.

After adding devices you can then create certain activities like Watch TV, Watch Movie, Play Game, etc. While this process is a little more complicated than simply adding devices it is still relatively simple, compared to other universal remotes. In fact, the software does most of the work for you by asking simple questions, like "which device do you use to control volume?", "What setting does your receiver need to be on", etc. Of course there are some situations where you have to tweak the buttons, and this can easily be done. You can reassign hard buttons (actual buttons on the remote) and/or add "soft" buttons, (virtual buttons on the touch screen) to do exactly what you want. I already explained this in great detail in my review of the Harmony 670, so I won't repeat it here as the functionality with the 900 is virtually the same.

The remote design is slightly different than the 670, but the ergonomics are still there and there are even new buttons that make it even more user friendly like the Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue buttons that are used on DirectTV Remotes. However it feels like it's less durable than the 670 and while my 670 has taken quite a few drops on a wooden floor, I don't think the 900 will be able to handle drops as well.

Adding to the excellence of the Harmony 670, the Harmony 900 offers a full color touch screen that is quite responsive. There are some touch recognition problems, but nothing too major. There are also multiple options that allow you to change the theme (look) of the buttons on the screen and you can also add predefined images to soft buttons.

A HUGE advantage of the Harmony 900 is that it uses a rechargeable battery as opposed to the 670 which requires 4 AAA batteries. This further eliminates the need for extra batteries because all you have to do is place the remote in its included remote holder/charger when not in use, and you'll be guaranteed to always have enough power to use this remote when ever you need it.

Another plus of this remote over the 670 is the inclusion of IR Blasters, which basically convert IR signals to RF signals meaning you don't have to point the remote directly at the devices to get them to respond. One issue I had with the 670 is that sometimes my A/V selector and DVD Recorder would not always respond to commands. This problem is alleviated with the IR Blasters. All I had to do was place the IR Blasters in my cabinet with the two mini blasters in the general vicinity of these "problem devices" and they now respond to the remotes commands without issue. There is also an option to use your PS3 with this remote with the purchase of a PS3 adapter.

With all of these pluses, there is one glaring omission that is sure to turn off some potential buyers. For some reason Logitech felt the need to remove macro capability. For those that are unfamiliar with macros it's basically a set of commands that you can program to do certain tasks with one button press as opposed to many. Macros are not the same as "Activities"; instead it's certain tasks you might perform AFTER starting an activity. Skipping a commercial or switching the aspect ratio of your TV which normally would require you navigating your TV's on screen menus are two examples you can assign a macro to. A macro would do menu navigating for you automatically, but since they are not supported with the 900, then you are back to doing this manually. Most people won't need macros in fact I never used them with my 670, but I can definitely see how it is an essential feature for some and it would make no since for them to drop such a huge amount of money on a universal remote that doesn't have a feature that earlier Harmony remotes supported.

Personally I like the remote, and it's more than likely going to replace my 670 once I get everything set up properly and used to the touch screen, but the exclusion of a popular feature on this remote is something I can't ignore. Why would anyone spend the money on an upgrade when it can't do AT THE MINIMUM all the things they are used to doing on their old remote? It makes no sense to me.

As far as a recommendation, it comes down to what you are looking for. I have never used the Harmony One, but on paper, I really see no huge advantage of getting the 900 over it. The disadvantage however is realized if you need macro support; the 900 simply does not have it. Even if you don't need macros, the only advantage I can see with the 900 is that it has RF capability. If you can live without that, you'd be better of going with the Harmony One for much less money. Personally if I were actually comparing them in a store, I'd end up going with the Harmony One because it's the better value. While the RF support on the 900 is nice, I could live without it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great remote it's just that you could save a lot of money while getting the same functionality (minus RF support) by going with the Harmony One.

Recommended ONLY if you NEED RF support and DON'T NEED macros; otherwise go with the Harmony One or another earlier model and save a lot of money.

"Crummy Remote- Product is Not Worth Hassle and Money" 2009-09-28

I have had this remote in remote for almost 2 years now. I would not recommend it. It is hard to program, requires new firmware all the time & is starting to simply breaking down with age.

My problems:

1. System randomly restarts for no reason. I can be holding the remote and watching a show when the remote just reboots. When this happens is shuts down everything. Whole reboot means ~2 minutes of waiting. Tech looked and figured it was some loose something inside.

2. A chronically sticking volume button. It cannot be fixed. Had a local tech inspect my unit and he said this was not due to "sticky fingers" but a cheap mechanical that could not be fixed as there are no repair parts.

3. Logitech Support is laughable. Good luck trying to call them and get help.

First of all, if you are running Vista, you wont be able to even program or update the firmware. The drivers arent recognized in the abortion known as Vista.

Second, the touchscreen buttons always lag. Sometimes by 5 seconds or more.

Third. Occasionally it will have a mind of its own and suddenly your volume or channels will switch when you least want them to.

Fourth. Constant freezing, where you have to take the battery out and back in to reboot the remote.

Fifth. It completely died on me after 4 months of "use".

Check out the logitech support message boards. The amount of problems with the 1000 is staggering. Im certainly not the only one.

Do not buy this remote.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but after having the Harmony Remote 1000 for a little over a year now, I've come to the conclusion that this remote just plain sucks. I purchased this as part of a new home theater I built. All of the remotes that came with the hardware I purchased work flawlessly, except for the Harmony. Well, specifically the touch screen portion of it. The actual physical buttons work just fine. Power on/off, check. Volume up and down, check. Change channels (one up or down at a time), check. Recent channels and mute buttons? Check. Using the touch screen for anything useful beyond powering up the systems - worthless.

Initially I thought it was something in my IR system that might be bogging things down. But when I go get the remotes that came with the devices the 1000 is supporting - they all work without a hitch. So I can only believe it has something to do with the touch screen and it's lack of good interoperability with the rest of the hardware/software.

I was surprised this wasn't an RF remote when I first purchased one, and Logitech has a new RF one coming out that I guess I'll probably get and try it out. Hopefully that one is better because it has a lot more physical buttons vs. the touch screen.

It's certainly not because I'm not "holding" the virtual buttons down short enough, or long enough, or in the right way. I can see the signal indicator showing it's sending something. Or it buffers up the actions I wanted it to perform, and then they all go through at once, or not at all.

I've tried turning the unit off and on again by removing the battery. I've tried reinitializing the device by re-doing the entire setup from scratch, and it always falls into the same glut of uselessness.

If Logitech ever needs someone to test a future release of a product, let me know - I'll be more than happy to help to make sure whatever replaces the 1000 or the 1100, is far better than this little bundle 'o crap.

Oh - did I forget to mention, this is my second 1000? The first one was DOA.

As an update for those of you considering this model (assuming it's being clearanced by some retailers) or the newer one, I want to warn you that my 1000 died after about 16 months. Which is of course, convenient, given the 12 month warranty period. All-in-all it was a good remote while it lasted, though casual users will be confused at first given the lack of physical buttons. Once you're used to it though, the touchscreen is great. I just feel that for an MSRP of 500 it should have lasted a bit longer... Ah well. Customer support is helpful, and the product does what's advertised. Now if only I could find a way to lease one for a year...

The Logitech Harmony 1000 totally fails. (1) It is incredibly hard to set up. The Logitech computer software is clunky and simple-minded, the Logitech "expert" server is buggy and ill-informed. For just three items (a new Samsung LCD TV, a new Yamaha receiver/amp/speakers, and a new Oppo DVD player) it took me several days of experimentation and programming (and I've been a professional computer programmer for years). A simple task such as "Play a DVD"--turn on all three devices, play DVD through Yamaha to the TV screen--could never be set up successfully. (2) It is infuriatingly hard to use. Even when programmed correctly, it is perpetually making mistakes which take many steps to correct. Worse, it offers very limited control of devices--so you have to get your original device remotes out all the time to handle specialized functions. (3) It is very hard to get help. Logitech's service is very poor, which is understandable since they would be inundated by customers with problems using such a poor product. (4) It is always out of date. The Logitech "database" which is supposed to have instructions for all devices is very spotty, and full of errors. New devices are not there yet, so perhaps you can find an older model and try to adapt it. Older devices get confused with newer model numbers, so that instructions for older devices are lost. (My Yamaha Y-4000, $1800 "digital sound projector", seems to have been displaced in their database by a Yamaha iPod dock!) Everything about this product is badly designed to produce maximum confusion. There are other minor problems, such as that the remote fits badly on its recharging dock, and if it is slightly displaced so it doesn't recharge, it totally dies. When my unit suddenly became completely inoperable (like a brick) just 13 months after buying from Amazon, I logged onto Logitech's website to find out that I would have to pay for a service contract to get any support at all. The unbelieveably high price for the Harmony 1000 just makes it even clearer that this is one product no one should buy. The product CONCEPT is a good one--who wouldn't want a single remote to control a complex media system?--but the Logitech product is unable to come close to delivering. (Amazon reviews of the very-similar successor Logitech Harmony 1100 remote suggest that it still has pretty much the same problems.)

"Snow Leopard Nightmare" 2009-09-27

Summary - For our kind of use and difficulty of setup (with Snow Leopard) this remote is not worth it, the instructions are bad and technical support wait times are long. It is also an amazing remote.

If I would have known how hard it is to set up I would not have bought this remote. It is also an amazing remote once set up but it was not worth it for me. Once I was 3 or 4 hours into the setup it always seemed like the answer was right around the corner. It took us 2 days to get it set up. If it takes you only 1/2 hour then it seems like a no brainer to me. If I had it to do again I would call technical support the first time the fix it wizard did not work and wait on hold no matter how long it took. I probably would have take only a few hours to set up and perhaps it would have been worth it then. I waited on hold several times but always had other things that had to get done away from the house. Logitech technical support has a great reputation though.

It was an absolute nightmare to set up with Apple Snow Leopard. There is a network setting that must be manually set up in order to fully set up the device and the setup guide does not say anything about this. The device seemed to be communicating with the computer fine so I ignored the small dialog window that came up - big mistake. The setup worked fine until the last step and then would not work. The wizards provided in the program to fix the problem were useless for my problem. Hours later and many internet searches later I came across a page that addressed the issue with an old logitech remote and an old apple operating system. It worked. I would post the page here but I understand Amazon does not allow it.

I am also finding that the setup program (that has to be used for any changes on the remote) constantly locks up. It also boots me off my wireless internet connection and I have to reboot the computer or go into the network settings to fix the problem. It also will occasionally lose the connection to the remote. The only way to fix that is to reboot as far as I can tell. We have 3 apples and it seems to do it with each one.

Many of the help pages and instructions found at Logitech were horrible. At one point several of us were sitting around the computer trying to figure out what they were telling us to do. It seemed like several steps missing. If we had not given up we would have had to contact technical support. Luckily the answer was found elsewhere.

It also does not work well with our cable box. A couple of buttons blackout the screen. So far we have found no way to get the TV working again except to turn everything off and start again. The cable box was not in the list provided so I had to program the Harmony with the old remote. Evidently it did not take even after a couple of tries. The remote the cable company gave us is junk and does not work well but much better than the Harmony in regards to a couple of functions. The problem may have little to do with the Harmony 1100.

Setting up favorite TV channels is relatively easy. It allows you to add icons that are nice but Logitech provides only a few. There is one great site on the internet that provided all the ones I needed. Not sure why Logitech would not provide them though.

The price here is great. All the local stores were $150 more.

"The Best There Is" 2009-09-24

There is stiff competition today among these high-end universal remotes. The Harmony 1100 is the Cadillac, the ridiculously-expensive, ridiculously-well-equipped tool that tries so hard to do so many things so well (how's that for a collection of superlatives). I'm glad to say, though, that it largely succeeds. It is a superior bit of hardware.

If you have used any of the other Harmony remotes, you'll find the setup to be simple--plug it in to your computer, install the software, and run through the wizards. It may take you fifteen minutes or a half hour, but it sure beats typing in codes, hoping to find the ones that match your hardware. With an expensive list of supported devices, and new ones being added constantly, chances are you'll find that it supports your device right out of the box. Once it is configured, it is as easy to use as you could hope for. The menus lay things out very logically, whether that is the list of controls for your DVD player or a list of your favorite TV channels. There is good visual and tactile feedback whether you are using the hardware buttons or the on-screen prompts. Overall, it is just a great bit of hardware that offers the next generation of an all-too familiar user experience.

Really, my biggest knock on the remote is its size and shape. I am accustomed to a remote that fits nicely in one hand. This one requires two hands (or one hand and a flat, stable surface). So you can't successfully (or easily) use the remote and sip a Coke at the same time. However, assuming that this is not a problem for you, I see no reason that you won't love the Harmony 1100. Logitech has outdone themselves!

"Excellent Remote for the price ($349)" 2009-09-22

I used a Sony RM-AV2000 since 2000 and there were many shortcomings which I had to live with.

a) Heft - Large and heavy.

b) 4-way/navigation buttons were only mapped to touchscreen soft keys with no tactile feedback. It was difficult to navigate on-screen menus (keeping eyes on the TV) while keeping fingers over the right keys. This has become an increasingly significant criteria in my search for a new universal remote; it had to have this four-way button built-in as a physical hard key.

c) LCD display was difficult to read

d) Soft keys cannot be labeled with a custom title, leading to confusion to its function later on.

e) Can only be programmed with 3 macros, numbered 1, 2, 3. Giving no indication as to what activity they controlled.

f) Takes 6 'AA' batteries.

g) Programming typically involved learning the IR patterns of each remote key, a very time consuming and tedious process. I find myself having to remap many buttons because the default layout was not optimal for my usage.

The Harmony 1100 had none of these drawbacks.

Programming the Harmony 1100 was exceptionally easy. Kudos to the developers for making the desktop application so intuitive. Never had to refer to the manual during the whole setup process. Remapping/reprogramming buttons was very easy too, thanks to the huge online database.

I have 9 devices in my home theater setup with equally numerous remote controls. I can confidently put all the remotes away now. I used to keep them around just in case there was a function I forgot to program on the Sony AV2000.

"If you want a quality universal touch screen remote, this is the one!" 2009-09-22

I recently purchased the Harmony 1100 touch screen universal remote and I am absolutely thrilled with it! It was very easy to program, and the support is un-matched. Had a iPod Docking station that needed to be programmed ,and I did not find it on the equipment listing that Logitech provides. Requested a service tech to call me, and with 30 seconds after sending the e-mail they were on the phone. The tech added to device to my remote and is working perfectly.

I have purchased many universal remotes, but the Harmony is the absolute best.........ease of use, quality....and price! Looked at others three times the price and I did not see any difference in the units....other than the complicated programming the more expensive units require.

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Harmony 1100

while it certainly isn't the least expensive computer like remote on the market it may well be the best. the only downside i can see is that the real live in person support is only available for the first 3 months of ownership. as it turned out, some of the functions (on the display screen) that i need were NOT programmable by me and could only be done with the aid of the technician on the phone. i guess if i update any equipment after the 3 month period and face the same unique situation i am a bit out of luck. other than that, this little hand held gem is worth every penny you pay for it. it is easy to use once set up, the initial customer support is second to none, and it solves the biggest problem of all with multiple devices, it allows true 1 button operation (even if it is controlling many multiple units). even my wife can use it easily by pressing just 1 display button to get everything up and running to her satisfaction. that in itself if worth whatever price they charge, lol the price varies greatly all over the web, so make certain to do a search on the product to get the best deal. at the time of my purchase, amazon was hands down the best price anywhere, and the transaction was a smooth one.

this is my 3rd harmony remote. They seem to only last me about 2-3 years before they break on me. i know that should not be the case for such an expensive remote BUT, the week or two when i was without it sucked. i had to use the remote which came with my cable box, and it was much less usable then my 880. you have to actually aim the remote right at the cable box. with my 880, i can aim strait up in the air and it works. best feature in my opinion.

This is the way universal remotes should work - it might not be for everybody as it takes a shift in thinking for how a remote works, but once you get past that hurdle, it just makes sense.

The difference between a Harmony remote and a regular universal remote is three-fold. First, the remote is "state-based" - this is a fancy way of saying that it keeps track of the settings for the devices in your home theater system - whether they're on or off, etc. Secondly, rather than devices the remote functionality is centered around "Activities." Third, programming the remote is done via computer and the internet (IMPORTANT NOTE: Setup requires an internet connection!)

STATE-BASED REMOTE and ACTIVITIES

This is the hardest thing to get used to. . .with a standard universal remote, you have buttons for each device and you bounce back and forth to control the parts of your home theater. With more advanced remotes, you can say "when I select the SET TOP BOX device, the volume should control the TV," and some allow macros to make it easy to get your system setup to the right channels, inputs, etc. With a Harmony remote, you use of it is based around activities, such as "WATCH TV," "WATCH A DVD" or "PLAY A GAME." These activities represent a "state" a particular configuration, or "state" of your home theater setup with certain devices powered on/set to a certain input, etc. . . While you're using the remote, it remembers what state you're in, so when you want to go from watching TV to playing a game, it knows what adjustments have to be made (essentially using macros to make those transitions.) This is important to understand, as I've seen many users get frustrated with a Harmony remote because it seems to be doing weird things to their system because they manually make a change to the setup (not using the Harmony remote) and things get out of whack because the actual state of the home theater differs from what the Harmony has stored. In essence, once you setup the Harmony, it should be the One and Only remote you use on a day to day basis.

The best thing is, if you have a problem, hit the help button and it runs through the diagnostics to get things setup the way they should be!

PROGRAMMING

My favorite part of a Harmony remote. With most universal remotes, you enter a series of codes to tell the remote what IR signals to send for a particular device. It can be MADDENING if you hit it wrong or have a unique device. With a Harmony remote, you install software to your Mac or Windows PC and then proceed to tell the software what devices you have in your home theater and rather than looking up an IR code, you simply enter the model number.

Once you've entered all your devices, the software suggests a list of activities and then runs through a setup to confirm the settings for those Activities (do you use a Receiver or your TV to control the volume - what input does your Receiver have to be on to listen to the radio, etc.) Once you've confirmed all the settings, you hook your remote up to the computer via USB and it sets everything up. Then you test it. . .

OTHER COOL STUFF

The remote also has a nice LCD screen for displaying the activities as well as custom buttons for your devices. It's not a touch screen, and that's a good thing. . .there are buttons along the edge that are labeled via the LCD screen so they're tactile.

CAUTIONS

Some TVs, particular older ones that require warm up might require tinkering in the software to get to work - adding delays to make sure all the commmands are accepted, etc. Also, this model cannot control the Wii, PS3 and other Bluetooth based systems or RF based control items. (There is an adapter for the PS3, but it ain't cheap.)

MODEL DIFFERENCES

For my money, the 880 is the prime item in the lineup. Lower models (570, 770, etc) have cheaper buttons, less buttons, smaller screens, etc. The 890 is the same model, but includes RF. And I'm just not sure of the Logitech One. . .

"Charging cradle kills the product" 2009-09-21

Before looking at this remote, I strongly suggest you search the web for the hundreds of complaints regarding the charging cradle. I also recommend you do NOT do as I did and ignore these reviews and assume yours will not have these problems.

When I first got the remote all was good. Yes he buttons are two small, but the remote worked well and was very easy to program so I overlooked this ergonomic problem. The entire family liked having one remote that worked our entire AV system. Then after about six months the remote would start to beep in the cradle because it was not making good contact. I tried cleaning the contacts to no avail. After a few days it stopped charging all together. Because the remote uses a proprietary battery design as opposed to AAA, there is not way to charge the remote other than with the cradle. A call to logitech customer service painlessly resulted in them sending me a new remote.

Several months later, remote two starts to have the same issues. I again try cleaning the contacts with no improvements. Again I call logitech customer service and again they send me a new remote.

Several months later remote THREE has the same issues. Logitech customer service says the remote is now out of warranty so they can not help me. Thus I now have THREE remotes with the same defect and ZERO remotes that work. Clearly there is a design flaw with this model.

One could laud logitech customer service for quickly replacing the remotes as they fail. However true customer service would be to fix a problem that is widespread instead of just stringing people along until the warranty expires. Logitech should either fix the problem or replace users defective remotes with a different model.

My advice is not to buy any logitech product that has proprietary batteries. I have a logitech mouse that has a charging cradle that stopped working after a few years. It uses AA batteries so I can just use regular rechargeables in it and keep it going.

"Good Universal Remote" 2009-09-19

I am overall very pleased with this remote. It was a bit time consuming getting everything set up the way I needed it to. Also, keep in mind there is no setup option deticated to a blu ray player. I used DVD, entered in my serial number and worked fined, but was a bit confusing during initial setup.

Being able to program the remote using your pc is probably the best feature of all.

I purchased the Harmony 880 several months ago here at Amazon, and quickly had it running my old Sony A/V receiver, a Series 1 Sony TiVo DirecTV receiver, an old Kenwood DVD player, an ancient VCR and my Sony WEGA XBR CRT. Easy. Then, over the last few months, I've upgraded several pieces of my system... switching out the Sony A/V receiver for a new model, adding on a Sony iPod dock, a new HDTV, and more... each upgrade with absolutely no problems whatsoever. A few times the software asked to "learn" some of the new component's remote commands, but after that... flawless. What I especially like about this is that now, when I get a new piece of equipment, I don't need to figure out how to make it work with the rest of my system and I don't need to learn a new remote. I just make the updates to my system in the software, sync up the remote, maybe teach it a few remote commands... and we're back in business. Painless.

In the time I have had my remote, I've experienced none of the problems with charging, rebooting, locking up, etc., that I've read in some reviews. If you look at the distribution of reviews among 1-star through 5-stars, you can see the overwhelming number of reviewers who rate this item very highly. I count myself among the many.
